2021 Virtual Workshops

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, all of our events are being held virtually in Zoom. This page will be updated regularly as new events are added. Students can attend without any prior knowledge of programming.

The events listed below are those run by members of the STEM All Stars ambassadors:

Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming

Date: June 23rd, 2020

Time: 1 PM – 5 PM EST

Description: During this workshop, the students will be introduced to object-oriented programming. They will undergo lessons in the foundations of Java and get to meet with teachers and mentors to learn about computer science and its applications. Zoom link will be provided upon registration.

Introduction to Machine Learning

Date: July 2nd, 2020

Time: 12 PM – 3 PM EST

Description: The students will be taught the basics of machine learning and the concepts behind it. Following the lessons, the students will get to experiment and run some models on large sets of data using Amazon AWS’ Sagemaker Studio.

creating assistive technology

Date: July 12th, 2020

Time: 12 PM – 3 PM CST

Description: During this workshop, the students will be introduced to the various technologies currently being used to help children with learning disabilities. We will be discussing different solutions — ranging from mobile apps to robots — that can be implemented and prototyped in MIT App Inventor. Zoom link will be provided upon registration.

Introduction to Neural Networks

Date: July 28th, 2020

Time: 11 AM – 5 PM EST

Description: This workshop will run for 6 hours with a lunch break in between to introduce proper techniques and develop a proper foundation for the students. They will be introduced to the basics of Python, and linear algebra. It is recommended that students attend the Machine Learning workshop that is being run on July 12th. Zoom link will be provided upon registration.

the applications of Technology in Healthcare

Date: August 3rd, 2020

Time: 12 PM – 3 PM PST

Description: This workshop will introduce students to how technology can help us learn about ourselves and our health without the need to go to a doctor for rigorous testing. They will be introduced to the concepts of Telemedicine and prototype different apps that can be made with Apple’s SwiftUI for Apple Watches. Zoom links will be provided upon registration.

Introduction to Vanilla JAvascript, HTML, and CSS

Date: August 12th, 2020

Time: 1 AM – 5 PM CST

Description: This workshop will introduce students to the basics of HTML and vanilla JS. We will walk them through creating a simple HTML website with styling done in CSS. They will also have the opportunity to win a free domain from Domain.com! Zoom link will be given upon registration.
